Naruto 2010 Year End Review

naruto-retro1Post Author: Bob

Hi folks, we’re coming to the end of 2010 and with the absence of a Naruto chapter this week and probably next week as well, I thought I’d do something to wrap everything up and keep the manga fresh in everyone’s mind when the new chapter arrives next year. This year has certainly seen some exciting things happen in the Naruverse. So much of the secrets that Kishi had been guarding since the beginning of the series have been slowly revealed to us this year. For the first time, we are beginning to understand the events of the past which became the catalyst for the world-changing events that are unfolding in the present day Naruverse. But at the same time, we’ve also been left with a bunch of loose ends and open-ended explanations in the wake of all the new revelations that I feel we need to take a moment to look back and make sure nothing is missed.

Nagato’s Rinnegans
So apparently Nagato was a descendant of the Uzumaki clan. This was said by Madara as he retrieved the Rinnegans from his body after defeating Konan. Nagato grew up in and was raised by his parents in the Rain village, so either his parents were refugees from when Whirlpool country was destroyed or Nagato was left in their care as an infant perhaps to conceal him from those who were hunting down Uzumakis after Whirlpool’s demise. Now we don’t know much about the Uzumaki clan other than what Kushina told Naruto inside his consciousness, but she certainly wouldn’t have neglected to mention that they possessed a Rinnegan kekkei genkai. According to Madara, he gave Nagato his Rinnegans – since Nagato activated his Rinnegans at quite a young age, Madara must have done the transfer during his infancy. Whatever the case, we now know that those of the Uzumaki bloodline are potentially compatible with the Rinnegan. But where did Madara obtain those Rinnegans in the first place?

The Fate of the Uzumaki clan
Kushina mentioned some history regarding the Uzumaki clan to Naruto. It was brief, but we do now know the clan specialized in sealing jutsu and many possessed incredible longevity. At some time in the distant past, possibly during on of the previous Great Ninja Wars, the entire Whirlpool country wherein the Uzumakis resided was destroyed by enemies who feared their power. The survivors scattered, many integrating to other nations. My question is why were the Uzumakis feared so much to warrant being wiped off the map? There were certainly many other villages/clans that also possessed powerful abilities… were they just an easy target? If so, why didn’t Konoha come to their aid as an ally? An entire clan just doesn’t disappear overnight. Also, why wasn’t Naruto told about the significance of his last name? And you’d think somebody along his travels would have recognized Naruto’s last name and shed some light on the matter for him. It’s almost as if information about the Uzumakis was repressed the world over. And if so, why?

Naruto’s “That Jutsu”
Okay, I’ve been confused by this ever since it first came up. I think it was Jiraiya who first started it when he warned Naruto not to use “that jutsu” after they came back from their 3 year training. Then Naruto underwent his first four-tails Kyuubi transformation, and it was assumed that it must have been “that jutsu” since it was so powerful. Yet the topic surfaced again when Naruto was given the key to his Kyuubi seal and was told that he’s getting closer to perfecting “that jutsu.” It became clear at this point that “that jutsu” was something Naruto had been training with Jiraiya to achieve, and that it had something to do with the Kyuubi’s power. Recently in chapter 519, Naruto has begun to learn the tailed beast bomb technique from Killerbee. This potentially could be “that jutsu” as it could be said that Minato passed down the Rasengan and Kyuubi to Naruto for just this purpose. But two things bother me: 1. it’s been implied so far that Naruto has been training towards perfecting “that jutsu”, but during his training with Killer Bee it’s clear it’s the first time he’s ever attempted at it. 2. Minato must have made sure to leave Naruto behind something that can counter Madara’s powers, but is a slow-charging single shot chakra blast any good against someone who can phase and teleport near instantly?

Who was inside Kabuto’s last coffin? Who is Madara?
It’s becoming more and more evident through Kabuto’s interactions with Madara that Madara is not who he say he is, or at least he’s not telling the full story. Kabuto has never really called Madara by his name and only said “you go by Madara these days” when they first met. And every time Madara Uchiha comes up in their conversations, it’s as if Kabuto is referring to him as a third person and not the ‘Madara’ standing next to him. And then there’s the body in the last coffin Kabuto summons in chapter 590 – its revelation was the first time I think Madara has been truly stumped by something and had no counters for. Although it’s not stated implicitly, most fans tend to believe that the body in that coffin is that of the real Madara Uchiha and that Kabuto means to use that information to blackmail ‘Madara’ into cooperation when he said “I haven’t told anyone yet.” That leaves the million-dollar question of who is this man who calls himself Madara?

So what did you think of the Naruto manga as a whole in 2010? Did I miss something important? Any other major mysterious worth mentioning?

  1. Hey there Bob, I have to say that this year was a god one, as it revealed many new things and opened up new doors. About your first point, I was having a hard time with the Rinnegan and the Uzumaki possessing it as well. I mean really it was revealed that the elder child of the Rikudo sage recieved the eyes and that the Uchiha are descendants of him. So for sure the only way that Nagato could have obtained it is by Tobi giving them to him. So Tobi definatly isnt lying. As to wear he got them I havent got the slightest idea. The only thing I can think of is if either he found the corpse of the sage somehow preserved or, and this is my theory, he implanted a pair of Uchiha eyes into Nagato and this somehow changed the eyes into Rinnegan when the Uzumaki, Nagato, activated them. It is a theory that has very little support but would be interesting. I mean even when Tobi goes to collect the eyes its lmost like he is harvesting them now that they are what he needs. Next the fate of the Uzumaki’s. I can only assume that the whirlpool country fell as many great nations do and that is from the inside out. I would guess that something happened within the village and the clan to make it destroy itself. Another possibility is that they faked their fall in order to stop being pursued or fought against. Naruto’s “that jutsu” had me going or quite a while. When they talked about the tailed beast bomb, my initial thought was like yours in that okay this must be it, but I really doubt it. Another theory of mine is that when Itachi left some power to Naruto it was connected to Mainato’s overall plan. I know that Itachi saus that it is something to stop sasuke, but I cant help but feel like there is some connection. Maybe I am nuts. We will see. Kabuto’s Coffin. How I wish I could’ve seen through Tobi’s eyes! The only ideas I could come up with was that the body was either, as you said, Madara’s real body, or perhaps the Rikudo Sage. I meanfor Tobi to feel like he had no choice but to allow Kabuto to join up with him, it must’ve been someone even more powerful than him or something. And that selection is very limited. If it isnt either of the previously mentioned then it would have to be someone that we know nothing about thus far, Well I have rambled on long enough. I look forward to reading everyone elses thoughts. Merry Christmas!

  2. @Bob
A great summary of the past chapters and points of interest, although about a clan not being wiped out over night, don’t forget Kishi’s favored clan the Uchiha’s, they were wiped out over night by two ninjas. lol. 🙂 So it’s not entirely impossible. Well, whatever the case, great review.

  3. “An entire clan just doesn’t disappear overnight.”

Lol the Uchihas would like to have a word with you 😛

“It’s almost as if information about the Uzumakis was repressed the world over. And if so, why”

Kishi asspulled it that’s why. Logically, Naruto would’ve been safer if his name was Namikaze, or if the Third just made up a random last name for him. The detrimental nature of asspulls creep up over time.

Naruto in 2010 wasn’t as good as Naruto in 2009. This was supposed to be “Kakashi’s year” and “Sakura was suppose to be more heroic”, but neither happened. All Kakashi did this year was get shot at by Susanoo and stopped Zabuza’s kunai, and all Sakura did was stand at the sidelines….again. Its also impossible to believe Minato could have had enough forethought to leave the Rasengan behind specifically so Naruto could use it to perfect the Bijudama. It borders on clairvoyance and I doubt Minato had that power. The only “Big Three” (Naruto, One Piece and Bleach) manga character that could believably pull off something like that is Aizen and most people regard him as a troll already.

This year didn’t totally suck (we now know what happened when Kyubi attacked the village, Kisame died the right way and Konan was actually a strong character), but Kishi’s asspulling almost made it so, and it just can’t compare to 2009 (Kage Summit, Danzo, Pain Invasion, Declaration of the 4th Ninja War, the Sage and sons etc.).

Merry Christmas Shannaro! Kisu’ll be gone for a few days. Peace.

  4. Ok poorly worded, what I meant was that the entire history of the Uzumakis seemed to have just vanished. Sure both Uzumaki and Uchiha clans were destroyed, but even though every one still remembers the Uchiha clan, no one has ever talked about the Uzumakis before. Isn’t that a bit weird considering how powerful they were supposedly considered? And considering Konoha has the Whirlpool country’s symbol on their uniforms, you’d think the Uzumaki would be talked about more often. Yet, it took 480ish odd chapters before Naruto heard anything about the history of his clan, from his dead mother no less.

  5. I say the uzumaki clan symbol on the leafs jackets can be explained simply with it just being a fashion thing lol maybe for the older villagers it means something but not for the younger since it’s obviously meant to be a secret I don’t think “that jutsu” has anything to do with the tailed beast bomb or w,e and on madara I never really thought he was madara ever since he showed up an right now it’s anyone’s guess who he is kisu is right there might be a lot of info given out through 2010 but 09 was way more epic an just awesome

  6. First of all great post bob,
Well i really liked naruto this year and also the characters improvement and the plot overall

I oppose the idea that minato created the rasengan to help his son: 1- He took a long time to create that jutsu so he probably created it before his wife was pregnant or madara attacked them
2- it’s more likely that it was meant to help his wife, the kyubi host.
and for “that jutsu” i think it just controlling the biju and using it’s chakras.

And about the uzumaki clan it probably happened around the 2nd Ninja war! so it’s a bit of a mystery still
And lastly for the mysterious “corpse” it is definitely someone madara is afraid of. i thought of hashirama but kabuto himself said that the hokages are all sealed away

    Merry Christmas everybody

  7. i must also agree with people who see the whole uzumaki thing as nonsense. I mean we also have to remember that tsunade’s grandmother was one too. They are too engrained in konoha history to have just been forgotten… Unless konoha was complicit in their extermination.
I have to agree with Bob here, there is no was ‘that jutsu’ is related to the the rasengan/bijuu bomb. Its goin to be quite interesting to see what comes out next year, hopefully kishi will try to plug up the holes with some logic. Because to be honest as we saw from fo and torune’s battle against tobi, all you really need to do is have a quick enough attack to attack him as he attacks you-like a well positioned kunai.
I do believe that tobi is uchiha madara. His current body be it ve original one or not is immaterial to me

  8. I agree with everyone about the disapppointments from this year.

This was supposed to be Kakashi’s year, and “yes” Kishimoto said in his typical end of year interview that he had to do other things first (similar to 2 years ago when he said we will have to wait to learn about Naruto’s past) and so next year will be Kakashi’s year, I hope so.

As to the Uzumaki thing: I also think it is total crap. If the Uzumaki clan was so powerful that everyone (except Konoha I guess…?) wanted them dead, then Naruto would be in danger for being associated with them. The only way it is better for Naruto to have the Uzumaki name is if the Namikaze’s were feared even more and they were wiped out too.

You have to admit though, Kishi was put in a tight spot here. Naruto needs connections to his parents’ roots somehow. At the same time, he doesn’t want to reveal too much of the story to the readers.

I think the perfect thing would have been to give Naruto some generic surname that all orphans get in the village, or something like that, and then after he learned his heritage he took his real name. I was kindof shocked that Naruto didn’t take the surname Namikaze as soon as he learned he was the 4th Hokage’s son, but maybe he doesn’t know his dad’s last name for the same reason he doesn’t know about the Uzumakis…. Geez, will the kid ask a question about his parents already?

My favorite moment from the year was seeing Minato in action the night of the Kyuubi attack. I know for some people it only raised more questions about Minato’s decision making skills, but for me, it only highlighted how awesome he was in battle.

  9. Since I’m too lazy to read all of the other comments, if anything I say has already been said, I apologize.

@Kisu; The “Sakura being more heroic” was actually true. She attempted to kill Sasuke, which I didn’t think she could ever do. Yesh, I know it ended terribly, but that’s not the point.

@Bob; 1) there is a mistake in the Madara section. You said “590,” when it’s suppose to be “490.” But I made that mistake in my post as well. 😛 2) If I’m not mistaken, the Hachibi stated that because Naruto isn’t in sync with the Kyuubi, he cannot use the “Tailed Beast Bomb,” which is just a fancy name for the “Menacing Ball.” That being said, I think Bee said that Naruto can use a Rasengan that mixes Naruto’s and the Kyuubi’s chakra. If I just totally read that chapter wrong, I apologize.

Oh, I think the Edo Tensei (Summoning: Impure World Resurrection) should be added to this post. I mean, we learned a whole lot about it (e.g. Tobirama Senju created it; Need a certain amount of DNA to revive person; Can’t revive people unless they reside in the “Pure World”; No risks for the user, etc.). In my opinion, it was important to the plot of Naruto.

    Anyways, great post, Bob-senpai!

  10. @Uchiha Trinity thats, an interesting point, I forgot all about that. I agree it does seem like Madara/Tobi is telling the truth about the Rinnegan not belonging to Nagato. The Uchihas recieved the yes and the Senju recieved the body of the f the Rikudo Sage so why did Nagato suddenly inherit the Rinnegan if he is a descendant from the Senju, it obvious he didn’t. Madara must have implanted them.

Maybe we don’t have any idea on how he obtained the Rinnegan but can anyone explain how can a Senju recieve them instead of an Uchiha. The Uchiha seem like he more suitable inheritor since they were given the Sages eyes. Also he isn’t collecting Sharingan for nothing, it may have a little support but it definitely has a little interest to it also.

  11. When it comes to the power Itachi has given Naruto maybe it’s a fail safe to stop anyone from extracting the Kyuubi. I mean if Itachi was preparing for the future, he would known Naruto and Sasuke would battle again and if Sasuke won, Madara/Tobi could get his hands on Naruto and the Kyuubi so what if he came up with a way to stop them from extracting the Kyuubi.

  12. @yellowflash2
“Maybe we don’t have any idea on how he obtained the Rinnegan but can anyone explain how can a Senju recieve them instead of an Uchiha. The Uchiha seem like he more suitable inheritor since they were given the Sages eyes.”

i thinks its b/c of the chakra and stamina control that he would have had if he really was a senju. we all know how much sharingan use depletes energy in uchihas so maybe the rinnegan would exert even more stress? idk…

tobi = izuna. im sticking by it. you just wait and I will be proven right mwahahahahaha

merry christmas and happy new year to all, and to those who dont celebrate any of the previously mentioned occasions ….ehh…. I’ll get back to you on that one.
