How strong is the Kyuubi?

A major issue of concern, for me, has been the question of the strength of the Kyuubi. According to the manga, the kyuubi ‘is the most powerful out of all nine of the tailed beasts; a single swipe from just one of its nine tails can create tsunamis and flatten mountains’. Additionally, it has been credited with having ‘near infinite chakra’. When you consider this reality, it brings to question the Difference between the Kyuubi and the Juubi and the Hachibi. If Kyuubi has ‘near infinite chakra’ that would imply that the Juubi has Infinite Chakra and given that it is equivalent to the combined power of the other 9 Tailed beasts, just how strong does that make each and every tailed beast.

From what we know, in order to achieve balance in Nagato’s Gezo Mado, what is necessary is for the kyuubi to be captured last. This implies that the Kyuubi is equivalent in chakra terms to the summation of the other 8 tailed beasts. What this would then mean is that the each tailed beast is equivalent in chakra to the total of the previous tailed beasts. This would mean that the Juubi is equivalent to Kyuubi+Kyuubi.

I have read a couple of theories on this subject and one of them states that there is an exponential growth in chakra from one beast to the other.

Imagine that in the graph below the vertical (y-axis) represents the number of tails and the horizontal (x-axis) represents the strength of the bijuu in chakra terms. This would suggest that the degree of strength change is not that hectic and places it into a more realistic vein (as the Juubi cannot, in my opinion, be this omnipotent being seeing as how it was subjected to the will of a man).

According to Japanese Folklore, however, the Kyuubi is a badass. In its only battles against Nekomata (two tails), Houkou (five-tails), Raijuu (six-tails), Yamata no Orochi (eight-tails) during The Ancient War of the 9 Gods, it suffered no defeats. NB: Yamato no Orochi defeated the other beasts using Kusanagi no Tsurugi (The same sword used by orochimaru in Naruto), before getting pwned by Kyuubi This however only implies that it is more powerful than the other bijuu and not necessary as strong as them all combined.

What this manga has shown us is that Bijuu are not that hectic. In their whole history they have been trapped, used as weapons and divided up. I personally will agree that the Kyuubi is significantly more powerful than the Hachibi, but not to such a degree as to assume that it is equivalent to Hachibi+Hachibi. This is because just as the six tails was defeated, so too was the seven tails. And the eight tails would have been defeated had Madara sent a more serious combination of ninjas e.g. Kisame and (rest their souls… Itachi or Pein)…

Well the point of this article is just to hear what other people’s views are and that is why I kept it short and sweet. So lets use this Naruto-less week to delve into some of the more pressing subjects and see what theories we can come up with.

  1. hmm i like your point. really interesting

  2. The kyuubi is just a BAMF, there really isnt any other word for him

Btw a BAMF is a Badass MotherFuker :).

And yea i agree, the tailed beasts must be pissed off after being used all the years, garuntee you naruto’s saying “just wait a little longer” implies that after all this he will free them or something.

  3. power cant be measured in terms of just chakra however. as mcuh as the kyubi may have near infinite chakra, its abilities are also limited, where as ninja can continue to refine and and learn new skills. this is evidence by the fact that man has enslaved the various tailed beasts.

as the kyubi may be immensly powerfull its skills apear to be quite limited. it has its chakra cannon, and it reflected peins gravity jutsu, but how much else is there really? aside from the chakra built up in its physical attacks such as swinging its tail or swiping at a enemy.

one must still remember that despite being smarter then your average fox, it is still the will of a fox so its intelligence is not the same as that of a human. humans can grow and evolve, so far we havent really seen much of that when it comes to the tailed beasts save maybe the hachibi.

on top of that the strength of the 9 tailed beasts has remained the same all these years, while each generation of ninja is stronger the the next, so when will the day arrive that human strength and skill surpasses that of the tailed beasts or the jubi, afterall on a all be it limitied level there are some ninja’s that are probaly close to there now. pein, kisame, naruto, sasuke, and probaly a couple others.

  4. Excellent post…
The biggest point that was made, and correct me if I’m wrong, is that the Tailed beasts are not invincible and one thru ten have and can be defeated. With that said, if a person can control, cooperate, or manipulate them in order to utilize their immense power that person would have a huge advantage in battle or negotiations…

  5. Your article makes a lot of sense. I would argue that Itachi never captured a tailed beast himself though… we know Kisame captured one (the 4 or 5 tails, I forget). I think Itachi always stalled and used his position to keep Naruto safe, although this was just to satisfy his objective of keeping Konoha and therefore Sasuke safe.

One interesting thing though, is why did the Sage Six Paths distribute the Juubi into 9 beasts of varying power. Why not 9 or 10 beasts of equal power? Perhaps he intended for people to use them as he had used the Juubi? As to the Kyuubi’s strength, the 1st Hokage was able to defeat Madara and the Kyuubi… and in the only panel we have seen of that fight, Hashirama does not have any of the other tailed beasts fighting with him.

  6. @ ripcord

after being shown his talents i suspect kisame may have captured most of them. that sword of his makes him a prime jinchuriki ass kicker.

kakazu and hidan captured the 2 tails.

deirdra captured one, though that was in a filler arc, as well as pein captured one in a filler arc as well. deirdra got the turtle and pein got utakata who held the 6 tailed beast i think.

  7. @Bringerofkaos

Actually Deidra did captuer the 3-tails in the manga. The capture list goes as follows:

    1-tails (Gaara): Deidra
2-tails (Yugito): Hidan, with Kakuzu as support
3-tails (beast on own): Deidra with Tobi acting idiotically
4-tails: defeated by Kisame, Itachi was not around for the battle
    5-tails: unknown who captured it
    6-tails: unknown who captured it
    7-tails: unknown who captured it

We know Sasori didn’t capture a Jinchurriki because Deidra appologized to Sasori for going after a 2nd one (Naruto). Orochimaru left Akatsuki too early. Tobi acted like a moron. Itachi was really trying to hinder Akatsuki, so he didn’t get any I would guess.

This leaves: Pain, Konan, Zetsu, the last two we know didn’t capture any, they aren’t the battle type. This means that the 5, 6, and 7 tails were either captured by Pain, Kisame, Hidan, or Kakuzu. I don’t think Pain made too many moves, so I would guess the last 3 are evenly split amoing Kisame, Hidan and Kakuzu.

  8. I keep wondering what the by-product of Naruto getting the 9 tails under control will bring him. What I mean by that is will he just have a bigger well of chakra to draw from or will we see the cannon and/or other tricks we might not know the fox has? With Naruto’s previous huge supply of chakra and now with what he has gained from the nine tails, wouldn’t he have more than anybody in Kishi’s ninja universe at this time?

Sasuke has proven, and back up’ed by Kyuubi, that he has “those eyes” as he quoted about Madara and dismissed the beast with a squeeze of his hands. I wonder what effect that will have in the coming battle between the two.

  9. @ripcord
the six tailed (or was it the seven tailed? cant remeber) was captuerd by Pein it was shown in in the end of the last filler anime with bubble boy…

  10. @palle

I don’t know how many times I have to tell people around here…. filler arcs don’t count because:

    1. Kishi didn’t write it, if it isn’t in the manga it doesn’t count, filler arcs sometimes don’t even make sense.
    2. I don’t watch filler arcs because of #1.

  11. You know what a awesome Bijou capturing group would consist of? Itachi an pein. Can you imagine if those two were a cell team…. they would capture most of the biju on their own. Sigh I do miss both Of them….. specially itachi

  12. “According to Japanese Folklore”: Madzi, this is 100% fake, it was started in japan as a fanfiction and devolved from there. The beasts don’t actually exist in japanese fokelore directly. I’ve done a bit of research into it.

I think Itachi captured beasts, just not Konoha or anything that would endanger Konoha/Sasuke.

I think the power is simply numerical, ex. the two is stronger than the one, the three is stronger than both combined, the four is equal to the one AND the three but not one, two, and three. so the nine tails would be stronger than the rest, but not exponentialy stronger

  13. @ripcord, since it was never stated who captured Utakata in the manga or databooks, the anime takes priority. It constitues canon unless Kishimoto himself says that Pain didnt capture Utakata. The sliding scale of canon would go something like this:

    1. Kishimoto (manga, databooks, fanbooks etc)
    2. Anime
    3. Movies, video games etc.

If anything Kishimoto says contradicts what the anime says, then what Kishi said is considered canon and what the anime said is considered useless bullcrap. If movies or other media says something, and the anime contradicts it, then the anime wins there etc etc etc

  14. THIS IS BREAKING NEWS, AND IT IS THE TRUTH WHETHER YOU CHOOSE TO BELIEVE IT OR NOT. EVERYONE IS SAYING THAT TOBI IS OBITO, WELL SORRY TO INFORM YOU, BUT IF YOU BELIEVE THAT, OR THINK THAT YOU ARE WRONG. NOW TOBI’S BODY IS ACTUALLY THAT OF SHISUI UCHIHA. NOW WHETHER OR NOT HE WAS ACTUALLY KILLED, AND ACTUALLY DIED IS THE QUESTION. OBITO IS DEAD AND ISNT COMING BACK IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM. NOW I COULD SIMPLY TELL YOU WHO TOLD ME THIS N WHY, BUT IF YOU LOOK AT THE EVIDENCE THAT IS IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE YOU TOO SHALL FIGURE THIS OUT, PLEASE PASS THIS ON, AGAIN THE BODY THAT IS TOBI IS THAT OF SHISUI UCHIHA!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. ALSO IF YOU ALL HAVENT NOTICED TOBI IS TOO TALL TO B OBITO. DANZO CUT OFF HIS RIGHT ARM TO ATTACH SHISUI RIGHT ARM, TOBI DOESNT HAVE A REAL RIGHT ARM. NOW IF MY RIGHT SIDE OF MY FACE WAS CRUSHED I WOULD NO LONGER HAVE A WORKING EYE, SO AGAIN THAT CAN NOT BE OBITO, CLEARLY TOBI HAS HIS RIGHT EYE AND IT IS CLEAR THAT DANZO ONLY TOOK ONE EYE, WHICH WOULD BE SHISUIS LEFT EYE, BUT HEY DO YOUR RESEARCH, IVE TOLD YOU ALL ENOUGH.

  16. you r 1 seriously messed up froot loop 🙂

  17. @kusuzachi you should really think about it and look into it, seriously.

  18. and spread the word if you can, thanx.

  19. @the truth

Umm, when Obito was crushed he was very young, in fact even Kakashi was very short at that time. Now Kakashi is relatively tall (er, taller than he was then). Why shouldn’t Obito grow too? I’m taller than I was when I was 12 yrs old.

  20. @ripcord, yeah scratch that part, but seriously look into it, Obito is dead it is Shisui. i promise you it is

  21. just wondering if naruto would be able to perform hand seals in kyuubi mode (fully transformed)…. if so that would be nice… i mean a massive kyuubi-mode (fully transformed) rassengan, or rasen shureken. or kage-bunshin…

  22. I aggree with allot guys on here, the tailed beasts do not train and hone there skills like ninjas nor do they want to i should imagine. so when they are put into people they are then fully utilized like huge chakra batteries and there for can augment the vessels abilities through the power of the tailed beast. i would go to say that the vessel combine witht he tailed beast given enough training and experience is more dangerous then the beast itself.

  23. I hope we see some tailed beast chronicles! either in movie format or in some sort of filler if we ever get any more fillers which is probably what will happen sometime!

  24. Shukaku used ninjutsu, i.e hand seals to use his Air Bullet technique. So far only he has done a real ninjutsu though

  25. “Kishimoto says contradicts”: Well Kishimoto said the 6-tails was captured long before the anime and long before Pein was really introduced. So this is a contradiction (but not a direct one) so I would argue the anime doesn’t count by your own definition if there were some point in argueing that, however my definition of what counts is different. I think if it is plot-relevant, to the manga, it is part of the Naruto series, therefore fillers where Hinata is really strong or where Minato meets Naruto while alive aren’t really part of the series since Hinata is weak (in the manga) and the second one is full of plot holes and will never be revisited in the manga (or even considered at all). The reason for this is mainly the inate contradictions that deviations from the manga make such as loss of power.

Kisu. don’t forget that Naruto has used Fox chakra to use ninjutsu (Summoning and Mass Shadow Clone)

The Truth: You should save obito/madara theories for blog dedicated to that or write one yourself instead of starting an arguement on an unrelated blog. There are counter-arguements for both sides, and what you said above has already been discussed at length

  26. @the Truth: Actually, if you think about it, maybe the Reanimation Jutsu has been involved, and Obito grew as in age. You can’t just assume that someone is too tall or short to be someone else. I mean, we don’t know the FULL capabilities of the Reanimation, as it could have stronger abilities, as to fully establish new, alternative, ‘life’ into a body that could fill the life source for them to grow. So, the Madara could be a puppet of Obito. But, this isn’t for discussing that.

@Mart and Kisu: I don’t remember Kyuubi using ninjutsu to do those things, I thought Naruto just used the Kyuubi’s chakra to increase his own supply as to create a mass number of Shadow Clones as he did. And, for the summoning, I don’t remember him using Kyuubi for any summoning, except when Naruto used his chakra, once again, to summon Gamabunta when he was falling in the fissure.

  27. @The Truth again: Tobi doesn’t have a real right arm, because he had to cut off because of the insect poisoning that Torune inflicted on him.

  28. @Mart: I seem to have missed the part where you said “Fox Chakra”, sorry.

  29. Naru: that’s why I said Naruto has used not the Kyubbi has used, however in the case of the Summoning he used the Kyubbi’s chakra without encoperating it into his own supply first so it is still the Kyubbi in a form using ninjutsu, there just wasn’t enough chakra for the Fox’s personality to come with it.

  30. Oh okay naru

  31. @Mart, exactly lol. Kishi didnt give ANY details on how Utakata got captured. For all we know a mini-asteroid hit him on the head and a wandering salesman found him and sold him to Kakuzu lol. But since the anime told us how he got captured, my lame scenario gets discredited.

  32. I don’t see the point in arguing it Kisu. since I ignore the anime completely. You know my view and I know yours, and that’s it since it is pure oppinion.

  33. @Mart, yeah I agree. But u are right about a few things. Kishi has made it blatantly obvious that Tenten and Hinata are useless so I ignore what the anime does with them.

  34. Hey, as long as we are evaluating the strength of the kyubi, can someone please explain why the “God of Fire” has yet to let loose one flame?

  35. I’m not 100% sure about this, but I beleive that the “God of Fire” title was just made up. A while back (for some reason) someone decided to create a fake mythalogical background for the tailed beasts. It may have started as a Fanfic. since it was originally in japanese and then translated, but unfortunately it has reached a lot of people as a credible source. If I’m wrong about that particular title, let me know.

  36. Okay! thanks mart2!

  37. great post,
