Naruto Chapter 442 – Five Seconds…

This chapter seemed really fast because it was almost all action, but I did enjoy it and found it to be a fitting end to Naruto’s battle versus the seemingly invincible God Realm Pein. I’m sure a lot of people were expecting a spectacularly ending like Pein being shredded to pieces by a Rasen Shuriken similar to how Kakuzu was done in, but I kind of enjoyed the multi-level strategy Naruto uses on Pein and then using a finishing move that pays respect to the man who taught it to him.

What the--- Nagato had red hair? I thought it was emo-black.

And did you notice how I just used ‘strategy’ and ‘Naruto’ in the same sentence? Who would have thought I’d end up using that word to describe Naruto, but it’s true and no exaggeration either. The plan Naruto carried out to finally take down God Realm was well laid out in advance and carried out with perfection. I know Naruto is no Shikamaru when it comes to real-time tactics, but this strategy of his was pretty close to that level. Naruto’s plan might be a little hard to follow with all the continuous action. I know it took me a bit to figure out how everything connected together, so I’ll break it down in case some people are confused:

1. Naruto’s strategy actually began last chapter. When the Pein’s sphere of compacted rock began to collapse, Naruto realized his one remaining clone back on toad mountain disappeared when he lost focus during his Kyuubi transformation. The bad thing is he lost his final reserve of sage chakra, but the good thing is he can now make as many clones as he wants.

naruto442-22. As the rocks fell to the ground, Naruto used the cover of the dust and debris to create shadow clones of himself and have them transform into rocks and hide amongst the debris. Naruto now wants to draw Pein close to the debris where his clones are hidden. Instead of attacking, he starts making demands from his enemy., this lures Pein into attacking Naruto.

naruto442-33. Naruto takes this opportunity to switch sides with Pein and at the same time use Pein’s own chakra transmitter to locate Nagato (already planning ahead again). Pein is now inside the debris field and is unaware he is surrounded by Naruto’s transformed clones. Now is where Naruto’s attack plan begins:

Plan A: Naruto uses a smoke bomb to conceal that he actually plans to throw two Rasen Shurikens at Pein, the second hidden under the shadow of the first. Naruto uses up all his sage chakra for this move. Naruto knows Pein will disperse the first using his Shinra Tensei, but figures even though Pein can’t use his technique again for 5 seconds, he might still be able to dodge the second Shuriken if he is fast enough.

Plan B: In case Pein tries to escape, Naruto uses two of his clones closest to Pein to reveal themselves and try to prevent Pein from escaping.

naruto442-5Plan C: In case Pein manages to defeat the first two Naruto clones and dodge both Rasen Shurikens, Naruto unleashes all his remaining clones to attempt to overwhelm Pein before he can use Shinra Tensei again.

naruto442-6Plan D: In case Pein regains his ability before the clones can get to him, Naruto creates more clones behind himself in order to withstand the forthcoming shockwave from Pein’s technique. He needs to stay within a 5-second striking range of Pein in order for plan E to succeed.

naruto442-7Plan E: In case, all previous plans failed to finish off Pein, use one clone to help generate a regular Rasengan and in order to reach Pein as fast as possible, have a second clone throw the real Naruto towards Pein and take him out with the Rasengan before he can recover again.

naruto442-8I think this multi-layered battle plan is a good indicator of just how much Naruto has progressed and what we might expect to see in the future from the son of the Fourth Hokage. Naruto has been bumming himself out in the past because he always seems to perform poorly in ninja exams (heck, he’s still a genin), but he has proved himself now and in the past that he has the ability to generate fast and effective battle plans on the spot even in the worst of conditions. This isn’t a skill you can just learn at the academy, and I think is proof that Naruto has the right material to become one heck of a Hokage in the future.

Although Naruto has defeated God Realm Pein, the battle is not over yet. He still needs to deal with Nagato and Konan who is protecting him. And after that comes the reconstruction of Konoha, the threat of Madara, and of course our favourite anti-hero Sasuke and Team Hawk. These will test Naruto and the rest of Konoha, but I believe they’ll come through this stronger than before.

naruto442-9Some final thoughts on the scene on page 1:
1. Holy crap, I think Tsunade has some competition!
2. Where did Pein stab Hinata exactly? I don’t see a wound on her chest, nor a tear in her clothing.
3. Sakura seems a little distressed as she is healing Hinata. I don’t think she’s sure of her own feelings for Naruto yet, but she does look a bit worried that another girl has so openly declared her love for Naruto. Plus, you could say Hinata has a distinct advantage over her…

    i think Naruto has always been smart. Stree-smart. because he didn’t have an adult or rather father figure to guide him, he has always relied on his wits and intuition based on ‘real-ife’ experiences of getting out of pranks. so yeah his street-smartness had paid off in most of his battles. and he really learns from past experiences. like someone said before in another post, Naruto is more of a warrior than a general (shika)

    Nice job. I did think he was going to make some clones because his last dispersed, but I didn’t see the clones being hidden in the debris in the way that he pulled it off. He was thinking more steps ahead than I could while I was trying to map out the battle strategy (and I’m a decent chess player, so thats a lot of moves!). Its funny, I though of the shadow shuriken rasen shurikens, but thought it was too high risk. Excellent job on Kishi’s part, kept me hanging on until the end.

    Can’t wait to see whether he goes after Nagato or collapses from exhaustion.

    Indeed! It took me a while to understand the intricacies of Naruto’s plan. Even though it is farfetched for a Naruto to think that ahead… I finally feel Naruto is now at a level where he is MENTALLY prepared to become Hokage.
    From sheer Heart, and from a Chakra perspective… he could’ve already been a Hokage, but this brings him to a whole new level.

    Btw. I enjoy Hinata’s new advantages ^^.

    Bob, I noticed that Naruto had his two shadow clones disguised as those rocks but I was wondering were all those other shadow clones came from. Good post on analyzing Naruto’s strategy.

    I was thinking that maybe it’s not a look of jealously from Sakura but instead a look that say’s “Hinata was willing to sacrifice her life for Naruto, for the person she loves. Am I willing too do the same.” We all know that Sakura has strong feelings for Naruto maybe those feelings are feelings of love.

    this chapter covered more of the battle than any other. and naruto has finally taken down god realm. i didn’t expect naruto to have created and disguised hundreds of shadow clones in advance, and certainly did not expect for naruto to use a normal rasengan to beat god realm. i also liked how naruto told pein to give up thinking he’s gonna give up. kind of like in jiraiya’s story.

    as for sakura, i think she has been developing romantic feelings towards naruto slowly, ever since he returned from training. after all, how can she maintain a long-distance, one-sided love for sasuke for too long? but now that hinata has openly confessed her love for naruto, sakura is feeling uneasy. did she expect naruto to be taken as a simple fool by everyone and didn’t think there was someone else who harbored feelings for him? also, hinata is definitely in a more advantageous position compared to sakura, as so many have noticed. sakura is screwed.

    now that pein has been beaten completely, i wonder what naruto will do next chapter. he might head for nagato right away. or he might stay behind for one or two chapters to see how everyone is doing, especially hinata. i don’t think kishi likes to rush things.

    Great blog, bob. Anyway, Pein never wanted to kill Hinata. He stabbed her becasue he knew the true emotion that awoke the Kyubi, anger. If Naruto thought that Hinata was dead that would pull a trigger automatically unleashing the Bijuu. All pein wanted was to capture Naruto, don’t forget that was teh main idea.

    After that battle, Pein is probably dead and now he has to head off to Nagato. But how the hell will he fight without sage mode, he’ll probably find something, like leaving a few more clones behind. Anyway, Naruto’s gonna win, no doubt about it.

    Oh and Bob, Tsunade has competition??!! Real mature dude, sorry for the outbreak. Got mad at almost everyone mention hinata’s uhh… shown parts. I mean really, if we were 10 year olds maybe that would be new but i doubt we are. Lets calm down on it..

    I guess, it’s more like she’s worried for Hinata, she is in a bad shape now and she was the only one to come for Naruto’s help, despite how unbelievably strong his opponent was.

    Naruto, as i mentioned earlier, is a true genius. He is a child of a prophecy. It’s a very satisfying feeling to see him come even higher than my expectations ))

All she did was cry… i mean really, i thought u didn’t want to be a burden. Hinata and Naruto have always been emotionally linked. Hinata was doubted by everyone in the Hyuga clan, Naruto was doubted by everyone. But he didn’t give up and that gives Hinata hope. When you change someone that person is automatically linked to you. Naruto changed Hinata and turned her int oa girl willing to protect and fight. Sakura just changed..ntop due to naruto. Sorry but im a Naruhina fan all the way.

We were worried about him making the transition to thinking & behaving like a Hokage, here we see his growth from a mere tactician to a brilliant strategist, achieved without a time skip in the storyline, kudos to Kishmoto for this. We have also in the past argued that his use of chakra and jutsus was very inefficient as compared with other shinobi, but his path has always led him to have to confront the most powerful opponents. The sheer tenacity, lunacy and unconventional nature of how he fights in a serious battle is his main advantage over the conventional shinobi (think back to Neji and Gaara). No one else present could have taken on the Peins as he did. I compare this situation to the many children who, while brilliant, can never do well in the conventional school system, because the system is not geared towards anyone who thinks or learns differently from the average child.

    There is still a ways to go for Hokage readiness, tho. There is the little matter of being able to lead a team via instruction, not action (he can’t always run off to fight all the battles) and also a LOT of boring paperwork…

    Based on her own self-pitying statements, Sakura realised a long time ago that Naruto had surpassed her in his ability and willingness to protect others. She has also now realised that Hinata has surpassed her in the willingness department as well… Whether or not she only thinks of him as a team mate / brother, it can’t feel good to know that someone else loved him and was willing to die for him while she has been abusing him all this time.

    About Sakura, she does have feelings for Naruto, she just doesn’t know how to express herself. If she doesn’t do something, there’s no doubt that Naruto will give Hinata a chance, I mean, Hinata is the only girl that has ever said that she loves him, some other girls just admire Naruto or I should say that they acknoledge him, that goes for Sakura as well. I think Sakura is confused between Naruto and Sasuke. Naruto has always being there for her while Sasuke has never been there for her, I mean, Naruto has always put his life on the line just to protect Sakura, and Sasuke has never done that, well I guess a few times but nothing compared to Naruto. Hinata, she’s being having a crush on Naruto since the very beginning, and now that she confesed her love for him, why would Naruto would not give her a chance.     I think Nagato’s hair color sucks, but something odd… if you look at all their hair colors, they almost make a rainbow. except Sakura’s hair is pink instead of the green it would have to be and you have to think of Sasuke’s hair as blue (Sometimes it has a tint in the anime….)

    I think Naruto will leave a few clones to gather sage chakra and then go to fight Nagato on his own, but then other will show up to help fight konan as Naruto takes on Nagato, the question in this possible set of events is will he realize even he needs help? and who would he choose?

    Anyway, I don’t think Sakura knows she loves him yet. Its one of those “You don’t appreciate it till its gone” type of things. Naruto has just always been there to do pretty much whatever she asks him to because of his old crush. Now she realizes how awesome he is and that he may have other options that just being around her in his off time when he doesn’t train.

    What I can’t wait to see is what everyone says when they find out he is the son of the 4th. He may keep it a secret at first, but I’m sure he will tell at least Kakashi (who may already know, he was very close to Minato) and he will probably talk to Tsunade about it because I think he will have figured out that Jiraiya knew based on the fact that his name matches the book and Tsunade was very close to Jiraiya. I just wonder if he will be angry at them for not telling him.

    Anyway, can’t wait for next chapter, until next time!

    @PCGnome: Jariya already knew… he was there during the pregnancy and all and as you said he gave minato the name, he also hinted that Naruto was the 4th’s son back when he was teaching the rasengan.

    I think that Naruto won’t tell anyone but Kakashi and Tsunade, and maybe Yammato. They kept his heritage a secret, a poorly kept secret but still a secret… that wasn’t for no good reason…

    Next ok when i started out of this anime I thought to myself duh naruto is the main charascter it always comes out in his favor in the end and the fact hes a cheap shinobi cas he has a demon to cover him each time , but this chapter has proved to be he cana make good weird but good strategies in quick action and realization of his perdicament and be able to act on it.

    Further more i really hope in the future HInata and Naruto got together , becuase she could use this battle as . WTH I FREAKIN JUMPED IN AND ALMOST DIED FOR U. but w/e sakura has nice boots xDlol but hinata is more revealing and open as to body (her dancing in the water fall naked) anyways

    Great chapter and i hope the real pain has a heart attack from the blast to his chest he just took from rasengan

    In regards to Sakura being jealous, I think she acted like a true soldier – a shinobi, she thinks using the strategies taught and stayed out of Naruto’s way because she was ordered to but probable would have gone as back up if ordered.
    If she was in love – like Hinata, she would have gone to help regardless of the orders and training given. Hinata is in love, Sakura is not.

And peace cannot be brought. Only one person can realize what peace is, and peace may be brought by forgiving. justice is a better solution then killing villages. That other kid who used to be the real GRP, i forgot his name, reminds me of Naruto. They both seem strong and stubborn. Also, they have the ability to quickly learn good moves. But he probably died like Obito or some other way.

    But there are some question, that i picked up, not sure if Kishi mistakenly drew or maybe something that we have to find out.
    Like as Bob clearly explained the battle plans, but there are some questions based on Naruto’s sage mode:
    1. How did Naruto get into Sage mode at first place after the kyuubi’s transformation?
    2. How did he manage to stay still in sage mode after creating so many clones and disguise them as rocks?
    3. The last page, 2nd picture from bottom right, shows Naruto has sage mode eyes before smashing that rasengan into God Realm Pain.

    Ya those are the question that poped into my head just reading the manga now.

Kakashi said that only Naruto can use raenshuriken because of his large chakra amount as the clone can have enough chakra to manipulate shape and nature. so i think rasenshuriken will need at least one clone.

    Naruto has places to improve and i agree with some of your points.

    @Kazekage-dono: I agree that Sasuke has better ninjutsu, because the rasengan is fairly weak in it’s first form, and unlike the chidori (which has the same delivery problem) it’s second+ forms are just bigger rasengans, and that compunds the problem instead of solving it.

    However, Sasuke wouldn’t have a chance against Naruto in Taijutsu, Sasuke is fast, but in Senjutsu, Naruto’s speed is off the charts, he even surprised two kage level ninja with his speed (Pein and Tsunade) (This speed makes the rasengan considerably better solving the above mentioned problem). Also I agree with darknight, the THROWN rasenshuriken is fairly fast, it hit Pein after all, I think the problem is that we have nothing to compare it’s speed too because the manga is basically a stop motion film…

    I did like your suggestion that Wind Chakra and frog-fu should be combined, seeing as the distance advantage of frog-fu is already pretty sweet, and it seems like a perfect combo. I think I want to see Naruto learn more about his father and the “Flying Thunder God” technique first though, and then I want a sasuke-Naruto Rematch.

    @9tail337, i agree with the Yahiko’s body thing you were saying. If naruto destroys Yahiko’s body, it would be like Nagato killing Sasuke in front of Naruto. Think back to the Zabuza arc, where Haku almost killed sasuke. Naruto was bent on revenge, thus adding to the cycle of hatred instead of stopping it.
